Probably spoilers galore, though with a movie this visual where the plot is irrelevant…but be warned.

Just got back from seeing Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland. Not sure this needed the 3D but it certainly has a fine look to it and some special characters that stand out (pun intended). The White Rabbit and the Cheshire Cat in particular are wondrous creatures. Alice looks like a young Gwyneth Paltrow and Johnny Depp is…always fabulous.

Alan Rickman voicing the caterpillar and Christopher Lee for the Jabberwocky are nice–didn’t really recognize the rest. This always bothers me just a little, too. Voice talent is one thing, but to impute some kind of on-screen acting to them is missing the point of animation.

The story was pretty lame and turned out to be a Joan of Arc slaying the dragon before leaving Oz. Turning this into a battle plot really wasn’t all that necessary. They would have done better actually, I dunno, coming up with inventive situations using the characters rather than having a wholesale battle complete with decapitating the Jabberwocky.

As lame as the story was, it was better than Avatar. The look was different (and I probably liked it more than Avatar, too). Modified “go see it” from me on this. Eye candy and goofy performances but lacking in an inventive script that should have gone along with such great visuals.

I’m not so sure I want to see Clash of the Titans in 3D–or see it at all, but I guess this is next up on the sneak preview parade.

Tomorrow, the “name the name” names names.
